The ECHODamp software application is a multi-channel audio mixer and echo controller designed primarily for the high-bandwidth musical video teleconference environment which manages echo without impacting the
quality of the audio. This session includes a live demonstration with Volker Werner, PDV, at the conference venue, with ECHODamp’s author, Dr. Brian Shepard, at the University of Southern California’s Thornton
School of Music in Los Angeles. Presented remotely to participants of the workshop in Vienna in 2013.

The ‘Low LAtency videostreaming system’ video conferencing program has been developed with the aim of minimising latency between remote points. Since its first public use at the Network Performing Arts Production Workshop in 2010 at IRCAM, significant experience has been acquired by the community using it. Quite a number of improvements have been made to the system, such as support for colour video, an even shorter audio/video latency, and now support for audio multi-channel, which is demonstrated live for the first time by a group of musicians in different places playing simultaneously together.

DVTS has been one of the oldest and most faithful work horses used in remote musical education across the network. Since its adoption it has provided the ability to perform remote masterclasses with a very easy and affordable audio/video setup. This is an explanation of the properties of the DVTS video conferencing system, including its history, components and specifications, such as quality ratios, bandwidths and system requirements. DVTS has been updated recently, with a new version which also supports Mac OSX systems, and other improvements.

DVTS Masterclass Demonstration

UltraGrid from the Laboratory of Advanced Networking Technologies (SITOLA)
is a software implementation of high-quality low-latency video and audio
transmissions using commodity PC and Mac hardware. UltraGrid uses uncompressed
or very low compression-ratio streams to achieve up to 8K resolution with as
low as 100ms end-to-end latency. UltraGrid is used, among others, in areas like
collaborative environments, medical cinematography, broadcasting applications
and various educational activities.
This talk focuses on recent updates in several important areas:
support for CPU-based low-latency H.264 compression; support for more
platforms (Windows port, BlueFish444 cards with sub-field latency)
reading/storing video from/to disk; support for up to 8K video;
commercial applications including GPU-accelerated JPEG2000 video, etc.
Short-term plans are briefly discussed, including more sophisticated
multi-channel video processing, advanced multi-point modes, and automated
orchestration of the environments using CoUniverse framework.

Near in the Distance: Panel Discussion

New technologies create new opportunities but also new challenges for the world of performing arts. Interactive performances between remote venues bring artists and audience, students and teachers, and even performers together and overcome physical distances and borders. The panel discussion faces several of those challenges including time delay between venues, sharing different spaces and the absence of physical contact between performers and discuss the pros and cons of multi-site interaction.

An Artist’s Perspective of Network Performing Arts

Telematic dance is an art configuration in itself; this is the approach of all creative processes that Ivani has developed since 2005. The Networked Dance performance had to be understood not as a dance-on-stage replacement, but as a new configuration merged into the heart of the Digital Culture: the Internet. This is her challenge, working with Distributed Dance in several projects with different partners across the world. The goal is to research a specific dance performance created on/for/in/through the Net, that plays with the Net protocol and specificity. Questions arise: How could the delay/latency be used as an aesthetic approach and not as an error? How is the dancer’s perceptual system affected when s/he has to interact with a remote partner and with a virtual world? How can we understand the simulacrum of a virtual shared space, and the different times zones convergence? This is an expanded dance, an expanded body.
